Plan the proposal

The Proposal Playbook

The main book. It opens with her — what she would actually want, what she has told you without telling you — and only then moves to the proposal itself. From there it works in order through the idea, the location, the timing, keeping it secret, who gets told, the blessing conversation with her family, what is worth spending on, what you are going to say, and how to practise it without flattening the feeling out of it. Eleven worksheets carry the work, because a decision you have written down is a decision and one you have only thought about is not. There is nothing in it to copy and paste.

Run the day

The Day-Of Card

One page. You print it, fold it once and put it in a pocket. It runs the day in order with a box beside each line — morning, before you leave, at the location, the proposal itself, the first five minutes after — so that nothing on the day depends on you remembering it. By then the thinking is finished. This is the only thing you read.

Short on time

The Three-Day Save

The whole method compressed into seventy-two hours. Same order, same worksheets, with the optional decisions cut and only the ones that change the outcome kept. It exists because some people find this page with the ring already in a drawer and the date already set, and telling them to read a whole book would be useless advice.

The Location Scorecard worksheet, showing Meaning weighted double above Privacy, Beauty, Practicality, Timing, Photography, Backup and Comfort, scored across three columns.

Worksheet five of eleven

Read a real page first.

This is the Location Scorecard exactly as it appears in the book. Meaning is the only row that scores double, which is the entire argument in one line: the lookout everybody uses takes Beauty and Photography and still loses to the bench where something actually happened. Three columns, because you will be wrong about your first choice roughly half the time.

Questions

Before you buy. The honest answers.

A few evenings if you are thorough. One if you are not. It is built to be worked in order, but the Three-Day Save exists because some men find this page with seventy-two hours left.

No. There are checklists in it, near the end, where a checklist is the right tool. The first half is about her — her story, what she would actually want, what she has told you without telling you. You cannot checklist your way to that.

No. One section is specifically about meaning per dollar, because the details she repeats afterwards are almost never the expensive ones. If you have money to spend it will help you spend it better. If you do not, it helps more.

Yes, and you should. The worksheets are meant to be written on. The Day-Of Card is meant to be folded once and kept in a jacket pocket.

Then you will be glad you thought about it beforehand, and the book raises it plainly rather than pretending it cannot happen. Nothing here will tell you she will say yes — nobody honest can. What it does is make sure the question gets asked somewhere private enough, and considered enough, that the answer belongs to the two of you.

Three PDF files: The Proposal Playbook, The Day-Of Card and The Three-Day Save. The download appears the moment your payment clears, and the files are emailed to you as well, so a glitch cannot cost you the product. One payment, no subscription. If anything does not arrive or will not open, contact us and we resend or replace it at no cost, and if it cannot be fixed that way you get a full refund within seven days. The full policy is linked in the footer.

Three out of four men have never said the words out loud before the day, so you would be in ordinary company. The chapter on this does not hand you a script to read out. It gives you a four-part structure and the worksheet that fills it with your own material, then shows you how to practise it without flattening the feeling out of it. Often more useful, because the idea is the part you have and the execution is the part nobody writes down. You can skip the first two parts and start at the location and the logistics. If you work through it and change nothing, you have confirmed the plan against every decision the book asks about, which is worth knowing before the day rather than after it.

Last thing

You already did the hard part. Now make it yours.

The ring is bought and the decision is made. What is left is twenty minutes — and whether they end up sounding like the two of you, or like everybody else’s.
